AI Flashcard Generator
One flashcard generator for PDFs, notes, docs, and videos
Deckio is an AI flashcard generator built for students who want to go from source material to a usable deck fast. Upload a PDF, paste notes, link a YouTube lecture, or drop in a DOCX file — then study with spaced repetition or export to Anki.
Free to start — no credit card required.

How to actually use it
01Pick your input type
Deckio supports five input types to match however your study material arrives. Upload a PDF for lecture slides, textbook chapters, or study guides. Paste text for notes you have already typed. Upload a DOCX file for Word documents and Google Docs exports. Drop in an image for diagrams, whiteboard photos, or handwritten notes (processed with OCR). Or paste a YouTube URL for lecture videos. Each input type is optimized for its format — PDF extraction preserves document structure, YouTube input pulls the full transcript, and image input uses optical character recognition.
02Configure card type and density
Choose the flashcard format that fits your study goals. Q&A cards (question on front, answer on back) are the most versatile and work for any subject. Cloze deletion cards hide a key term in a sentence — ideal for memorizing definitions, vocabulary, and terminology. Multiple choice cards present options to choose from, simulating exam conditions. Set density from brief (8-15 cards covering major concepts) to comprehensive (30-50+ cards with granular detail). You can also specify a subject area and language.
03Add custom instructions (optional)
Custom instructions let you steer the AI toward the content that matters most. Examples: 'focus on definitions and key terms', 'make exam-style questions', 'cover only the section on cellular respiration', 'create cards at a graduate-level difficulty', or 'include clinical applications'. This step is optional but makes the deck more targeted when you know what you need to study.
04Review, edit, and save
Browse every generated card. Edit questions and answers, delete cards that are too easy or off-topic, and keep the ones targeting your weak spots. Save the deck to your library for spaced repetition review. Deckio uses the SM-2 algorithm (the same one Anki uses) to schedule reviews — cards you struggle with appear more often, while cards you know are spaced further apart. You can also export to Anki (.apkg) on Pro and trial accounts.
Why use an AI flashcard generator
Flashcards are one of the most effective study tools available. Active recall (testing yourself) and spaced repetition (reviewing at optimal intervals) are backed by decades of cognitive science research. The problem has always been the creation step: turning your study material into individual flashcards is tedious, time-consuming work that many students skip entirely.
An AI flashcard generator removes the creation bottleneck. Instead of spending 2-3 hours manually typing cards from a 30-page PDF, you upload the document and get a complete first-draft deck in under a minute. You still review and edit the cards (AI is a drafting tool, not a finished product), but you skip the slow transcription work.
Deckio is purpose-built for this workflow, unlike generic AI chat tools. ChatGPT or Claude can generate flashcard text if you prompt them correctly, but then you have to copy each card into a separate app, format it, and organize it into a deck. Deckio handles the entire pipeline: input processing, card generation, deck editing, saving, spaced repetition review, sharing, and Anki export — all in one tool.
The result is that more students actually use flashcards and active recall because the barrier to getting started drops from hours to minutes.
Who this is for
Weekly lecture review
After each lecture, upload the slides (PDF) or paste your notes and generate a review deck. Study it before the next class. Over a semester, this builds a comprehensive flashcard library covering all your course material — ready for finals without a last-minute card creation marathon.
Exam preparation across multiple sources
When an exam covers lectures, readings, and supplementary videos, use Deckio's different input modes to generate cards from each source. Combine them into a single exam review deck. Custom instructions like 'focus on likely exam topics' help prioritize the most important material.
Professional certification study
Preparing for certifications like the CPA, PMP, AWS, or bar exam often involves hundreds of pages of study material. Upload study guides as PDFs, paste practice question explanations as text, and generate targeted flashcard decks for each domain or topic area.
What it looks like
Input
A student uploads lecture slides, pastes summary notes, and adds extra instructions to focus the cards on likely exam topics.
Generated cards
Why use an AI flashcard generator?
It cuts down the manual work required to turn study material into review cards.
What still matters after generation?
Editing weak cards and reviewing consistently.
What inputs does Deckio support?
PDFs, text notes, DOCX files, images, and YouTube lectures.
Generic AI chat tools can create flashcard text, but Deckio is built around a complete study workflow: file upload and text extraction, card generation with multiple types, deck editing, saving, spaced repetition review with SM-2 scheduling, deck sharing, and Anki export. It replaces the multi-step process of prompting an AI, copying the output, and manually organizing cards in a separate app.
Questions
Can I start for free?+
Yes. Free accounts get 100 cards per month with PDF support (up to 15 pages), text input, and image input. No credit card required. The 7-day free trial unlocks Pro features including YouTube input, 150-page PDFs, Anki export, and 300 cards.
Is AI generation enough on its own?+
AI generation is best used as a fast first draft. The generated cards are accurate for most content, but reviewing and editing them improves quality. Think of it as getting 80% of the work done automatically, then spending a few minutes on the remaining 20%.
Can I export to Anki?+
Yes. Deckio exports decks as .apkg files, which is Anki's native format. Import the file in Anki and all your cards appear ready for review. Export is available on Pro ($6/month), Ultimate ($12/month), and during the free 7-day trial.
How is Deckio different from using ChatGPT?+
ChatGPT can generate flashcard text, but you still need to copy each card into a separate app, format it, and organize decks manually. Deckio handles the entire workflow: file upload, card generation, editing, deck management, spaced repetition review, sharing, and Anki export — all in one place.
What card types are available?+
Q&A (basic question and answer), cloze deletion (fill-in-the-blank where a key term is hidden), and multiple choice (question with answer options). Each type is suited to different study goals.
Does the AI work for any subject?+
Yes. Students use Deckio for medicine, law, engineering, computer science, languages, humanities, business, and more. The AI adapts to the content you provide — it does not need subject-specific configuration.
Can I study on my phone?+
Yes. Deckio is a progressive web app (PWA) that works in any modern browser on phone, tablet, or desktop. You can install it to your home screen for app-like access. Cloud sync on Pro and Ultimate plans keeps your decks updated across all your devices.
How does spaced repetition work in Deckio?+
Deckio uses the SM-2 algorithm, the same spaced repetition system used by Anki. After reviewing a card, you rate it as Again, Hard, Good, or Easy. The algorithm adjusts the next review date based on your rating — cards you struggle with appear more often, and cards you know well are spaced further apart.
