AI Flashcard Maker
Make flashcards with AI in seconds
Stop spending hours typing flashcards by hand. Deckio reads your study material — PDFs, notes, images, DOCX, or YouTube — and creates accurate flashcards using AI. Choose between Q&A, cloze deletion, and multiple choice formats, then study with built-in spaced repetition or export to Anki.
Free to start — no credit card required.

How to actually use it
01Choose your input and upload
Deckio accepts study material in five formats. Upload a PDF for lecture slides, textbook excerpts, or study guides (up to 15 pages free, 150 on Pro). Paste text directly for notes, summaries, or content you have already typed. Upload a DOCX file for Word documents and Google Docs exports. Drop in an image for diagrams, whiteboard photos, or handwritten notes — Deckio uses OCR to extract the text. Or paste a YouTube URL to generate cards from a lecture video transcript (Pro and trial only).
02Configure your card settings
Before generating, tell Deckio what kind of cards you want. Q&A cards place a question on the front and an answer on the back — the most versatile format. Cloze deletion cards embed a hidden term in a sentence, perfect for memorizing definitions and vocabulary. Multiple choice cards present options to select from, simulating standardized test conditions. Set density from brief (high-level concepts) to comprehensive (detailed coverage). Add optional custom instructions to focus the AI on specific topics, difficulty levels, or question styles.
03Review and edit your deck
Once the AI generates your cards, review each one. The AI produces a strong first draft, but you know your material best. Edit questions or answers that need refinement, delete cards that are too basic or off-topic, and keep the ones that challenge you. This editing step typically takes 2-5 minutes and significantly improves the deck quality.
04Study with spaced repetition or export
Save the deck and start studying with Deckio's built-in spaced repetition system. The SM-2 algorithm (the same one Anki uses) schedules review sessions based on how well you know each card. Cards you miss come back sooner; cards you know well appear less frequently. If you prefer Anki, export the deck as a .apkg file on Pro and trial accounts. You can also share decks via link with classmates.
Why use an AI flashcard maker instead of making cards by hand
The biggest barrier to using flashcards is creation time. A 30-page lecture PDF contains 50-100 potential flashcard concepts. Typing each one manually into a flashcard app takes 2-4 hours — time most students do not have, especially during exam season when the need for flashcards is greatest.
An AI flashcard maker automates the most time-consuming part of the process. Upload your material, and in under a minute you have a complete deck ready for review. You still edit and refine the cards (the AI handles the first draft, you handle quality control), but the hours of typing are eliminated.
This is not just a convenience feature — it changes study behavior. Students who would not have made flashcards at all (because the time cost was too high) now use them regularly. More students using active recall and spaced repetition means better learning outcomes, and it starts with making the card creation step painless.
Deckio is built specifically for this workflow. Unlike prompting a generic chatbot and then copying the output into a separate app, Deckio handles everything in one place: file processing, card generation, editing, deck management, spaced repetition scheduling, and export.
Who this is for
Medical students drowning in lecture content
Med school produces more lecture material per week than any student can manually convert to flashcards. Upload each lecture PDF to Deckio, generate cards in cloze deletion mode for terminology, and export to Anki to add to your daily review rotation. Cover more material in less time.
Language learners building vocabulary decks
Paste vocabulary lists, grammar explanations, or reading passages into Deckio. Generate cloze cards for fill-in-the-blank vocabulary practice or Q&A cards for grammar rules. Set the language setting so cards are generated in your target language.
Professionals preparing for certification exams
Upload study guides for certifications like CPA, PMP, AWS, CompTIA, or real estate licensing. Generate multiple choice cards that simulate the exam format. Use custom instructions like 'focus on domain 3' to target specific knowledge areas.
What it looks like
Input
You provide the source material and optionally add custom instructions like 'focus on definitions' or 'exam-style questions only'. Deckio's AI reads the content and generates cards.
Generated cards
What types of flashcards can AI generate?
Q&A (basic), cloze deletion (fill-in-the-blank), and multiple choice.
Can I customize what the AI focuses on?
Yes. Add instructions like 'focus on key terms' or 'make exam-style questions'.
What inputs does the AI flashcard maker support?
PDFs, text notes, DOCX files, images, and YouTube videos.
Traditional flashcard apps like Quizlet and Anki require you to write every card manually. AI flashcard makers like Deckio automate the first draft, cutting creation time from hours to under a minute. You still edit and refine, but the tedious typing step is eliminated. Unlike using ChatGPT for flashcard generation, Deckio handles the entire workflow in one place — no copy-pasting between apps.
Questions
Is the AI flashcard maker free?+
Yes. Free accounts get 100 cards per month with PDF (up to 15 pages), text, and image input. No credit card required. The 7-day free trial unlocks Pro features including YouTube input, higher page limits, Anki export, and 300 cards.
How good are AI-generated flashcards?+
They are a strong first draft — accurate for most factual content. You can edit any card after generation to fine-tune wording, adjust difficulty, or add context. Think of it as getting 80% of the work done automatically and spending a few minutes on the rest.
Does it work for medical or law school?+
Yes. Medical students use Deckio for pharmacology, anatomy, pathophysiology, and biochemistry. Law students use it for case briefs, outlines, and bar prep material. The AI adapts to dense, specialized content.
Can I generate multiple choice questions?+
Yes. Select MCQ mode before generating and the AI creates questions with answer options, including distractors. This is useful for simulating exam conditions and practicing elimination strategies.
How does spaced repetition work?+
After saving a deck, study it with Deckio's built-in review system. Rate each card as Again, Hard, Good, or Easy. The SM-2 algorithm (same as Anki) schedules the next review — cards you struggle with appear more often, cards you know are spaced further apart.
Can I export cards to Anki?+
Yes. Deckio exports decks as .apkg files that import directly into Anki. All your cards, including any edits, carry over. Export is available on Pro ($6/month), Ultimate ($12/month), and during the 7-day free trial.
Does it work on mobile devices?+
Yes. Deckio is a progressive web app (PWA) that works on any device with a modern browser — phone, tablet, or computer. Install it to your home screen for quick access. Cloud sync keeps signed-in users' decks in sync across devices.
What languages are supported?+
Deckio generates flashcards in most major languages. Upload material in any language and cards are generated in that language, or use the language setting to request cards in a different language. This works for both the questions and answers.
