How to actually use it
01Upload your PDF and select pages
Drag and drop any PDF into Deckio or click to browse your files. You will see a thumbnail preview of every page. Select only the pages that contain study-worthy material — skip cover pages, table of contents, and appendices. Free accounts support up to 15 pages per PDF, Pro supports 150, and Ultimate handles up to 500 pages. Deckio extracts text directly from the PDF structure, so digitally created documents work best. Scanned documents are supported too, with text extracted via OCR.
02Choose your card type and density
Pick the flashcard format that matches how you study. Q&A cards are the default — a question on the front, an answer on the back. Cloze deletion cards hide a key term inside a sentence, which works well for memorizing definitions and terminology. Multiple choice cards give you options to choose from, simulating exam conditions. Then set the density: a brief deck gives you 8-15 cards covering the major concepts, while a comprehensive deck generates 30-50+ cards with finer detail.
03Add custom instructions (optional)
Tell the AI what to focus on. For example: 'focus on definitions only', 'make exam-style questions', 'skip the introduction section', or 'focus on the differences between classical and operant conditioning'. Custom instructions help the AI prioritize the material that matters most for your upcoming test or assignment.
04Review, edit, and save your deck
Once generation completes, browse through every card. Edit any card where the wording is not quite right, delete cards that cover material you already know, and keep the ones that target your weak spots. Save the deck to your library to review later, or start studying immediately with Deckio's built-in spaced repetition. If you use Anki, you can export the deck as a .apkg file on Pro and trial accounts.
Why students convert PDFs to flashcards
Most course material arrives as PDFs — lecture slides, textbook chapters, study guides, reading assignments. The problem is that reading a PDF passively is one of the least effective study strategies. Research on learning science consistently shows that active recall (testing yourself on the material) beats passive review by a wide margin.
Flashcards turn passive reading into active recall. But creating flashcards manually from a 40-page PDF is a 3-4 hour project. Many students skip the process entirely because the upfront time cost feels too high, especially during exam season when time is scarce.
Deckio eliminates that bottleneck. Upload a PDF, select pages, and get a full deck in under a minute. The AI reads the document and generates questions around the facts, definitions, relationships, and processes worth memorizing. You still review and edit the cards — that step is important — but you skip the slow transcription work that makes manual card creation so tedious.
The result is that more students actually use flashcards and active recall, because the barrier to creating a deck drops from hours to minutes.
Who this is for
College students with weekly lecture slides
Upload each week's lecture PDF after class. Generate a review deck before the next session so you arrive having already tested yourself on the previous material. Over a semester, this builds a comprehensive flashcard library that covers everything for the final exam.
Law students processing case briefs
Upload case brief PDFs or legal outlines and generate cards focused on holdings, reasoning, and key legal principles. Use cloze deletion mode for memorizing specific legal standards and tests that appear on bar-style exams.
Nursing students with clinical guidelines
Upload clinical procedure PDFs, pharmacology references, or pathophysiology study guides. Generate cards that cover drug interactions, dosage calculations, and assessment findings. Export to Anki for daily review during clinical rotations.
What it looks like
Input
Intro Psychology notes: working memory, long-term memory, encoding, retrieval cues, spacing effect, retrieval practice.
Generated cards
What is the spacing effect?
Information is remembered better when study sessions are spaced out over time.
What are retrieval cues?
Stimuli that help trigger recall of stored information.
What is retrieval practice?
Actively recalling information to strengthen memory.
Compared with copying notes into Anki or Quizlet by hand, Deckio reduces the setup work from hours to under a minute. You still edit and refine cards, but you skip the slow transcription step. For students who process multiple PDFs per week, this adds up to dozens of hours saved over a semester.
Questions
Does Deckio work for scanned PDFs?+
Yes. Scanned PDFs are supported through OCR text extraction. Text-based PDFs (created digitally) produce faster and cleaner results. If your scan is poor quality or handwritten, try the image input mode instead.
Can I edit the flashcards after generation?+
Yes. Every card can be edited — change the question, update the answer, delete cards you do not need. The generated deck is a first draft you refine, not a final product.
How many cards does Deckio make from a PDF?+
It depends on the density setting you choose and the length of your PDF. A brief deck from a 10-page PDF typically produces 8-15 cards. Comprehensive mode from the same PDF might generate 30-50 cards covering finer details.
How many PDF pages can I process for free?+
Free accounts support up to 15 pages per PDF and 100 cards per month. Pro ($6/month) supports 150 pages and 1,500 cards. Ultimate ($12/month) supports 500 pages and 5,000 cards.
Can I export the flashcards to Anki or Quizlet?+
Deckio supports .apkg export for Anki on Pro, Ultimate, and trial accounts. You can also copy cards or share decks via link. For Quizlet, you can manually copy the card content.
What languages are supported?+
Deckio can generate flashcards in most major languages. You can upload a PDF in any language and the AI generates cards in that same language, or you can request cards in a different language using the language setting.
Does it work on mobile?+
Yes. Deckio is a progressive web app (PWA) that works in any modern browser on phone, tablet, or computer. You can install it to your home screen for quick access.
Is there a free trial?+
Yes. New users get a 7-day free trial with Pro-level features including 300 cards, 150-page PDF support, and .apkg export. After the trial, the free tier gives you 100 cards per month with 15-page PDF support.
