Biochemistry
Biochemistry flashcards for metabolism, enzymes, and molecular biology
Upload Lehninger chapter PDFs, metabolic pathway diagrams, or lecture notes and generate flashcards for enzymes, cofactors, regulation, and inherited metabolic diseases. Built for the class where forgetting one enzyme can cost you 10 exam points.
Free to start — no credit card required.
01
Upload biochem content
Pathway PDFs, textbook chapters, or enzyme regulation notes — all supported.
02
Generate pathway and enzyme cards
Step-by-step cloze cards for pathways, Q&A cards for enzyme regulation.
03
Review with spaced repetition
Biochem rewards daily review more than almost any other preclinical class.
How to actually use it
01Upload one pathway at a time
Do not try to generate one giant deck covering all of metabolism. Upload one pathway at a time — glycolysis, TCA cycle, oxidative phosphorylation, fatty acid synthesis, urea cycle, etc. A pathway-focused deck of 20-40 cards is reviewable and connects to the next pathway logically.
02Use cloze cards for pathway step recall
For pathways, cloze deletion cards are unbeatable. Deckio generates cloze cards that blank out one enzyme or intermediate per card, forcing you to recall the full pathway sequence during review. Set card type to 'cloze deletion' in the generator settings.
03Request disease association cards
Biochemistry on USMLE is tested through metabolic disease presentations — PKU, galactosemia, McArdle, OTC deficiency, homocystinuria, etc. Use custom instructions: 'include disease association cards linking each enzyme deficiency to the clinical presentation.' This is where Step 1 biochem points are scored.
Why biochemistry is the class flashcards were made for
Biochemistry is the single densest memorization course in most preclinical curricula. One pathway (like the TCA cycle) has 8 enzymes, 8 intermediates, multiple regulatory points, and 3-5 clinical associations per step. Rereading Lehninger or Harper does not build this level of recall.
The students who do well in biochem build flashcard decks the week material is introduced and review daily for the whole semester. The students who wait to build decks during exam week score significantly lower — this has been documented in multiple learning science studies on medical student performance.
Deckio makes the daily-build workflow realistic. Generate a pathway deck in 1 minute, edit for 5 minutes, add to your daily review pile. You keep pace with lecture instead of falling weeks behind.
Who this is for
Lecture exam prep (weekly)
Generate one pathway deck per week. Review daily. Enter exam week with material already consolidated instead of cramming.
MCAT biochemistry review
Biochem is ~25% of the MCAT Bio/Biochem section. Upload Kaplan or review book chapters to build a focused MCAT biochem deck.
USMLE Step 1 biochem dedicated prep
Upload First Aid biochem (~50 pages) and generate a condensed high-yield deck focused on metabolic diseases.
What it looks like
Input
The urea cycle converts ammonia (toxic) to urea (excretable) in the liver. Steps: (1) CO2 + NH3 + 2 ATP → carbamoyl phosphate, catalyzed by carbamoyl phosphate synthetase I (CPS-I, rate-limiting, requires N-acetylglutamate as activator). (2) Ornithine + carbamoyl phosphate → citrulline (OTC, ornithine transcarbamylase). (3) Citrulline + aspartate → argininosuccinate. (4) Argininosuccinate → arginine + fumarate. (5) Arginine → ornithine + urea. OTC deficiency is the most common urea cycle disorder — X-linked, presents with elevated ammonia and orotic acid, no elevated BUN.
Generated cards
What is the rate-limiting enzyme of the urea cycle?
Carbamoyl phosphate synthetase I (CPS-I). Requires N-acetylglutamate as an allosteric activator.
What is the inheritance pattern of OTC deficiency?
X-linked recessive — the only urea cycle disorder that is not autosomal recessive.
What lab findings suggest OTC deficiency?
Elevated serum ammonia, elevated urinary orotic acid, decreased BUN, respiratory alkalosis from hyperventilation.
Where in the cell do the urea cycle steps occur?
The first two steps (to citrulline) are mitochondrial. Steps 3-5 are cytosolic.
Making biochem cards by hand takes 2-3 hours per pathway. Premade Anki biochem decks like AnKing or B&B-linked decks are comprehensive but generic. Deckio generates from your specific lecture material in seconds, so your deck emphasizes the pathways and diseases your class or boards actually test.
Questions
Can Deckio generate cloze cards for pathways?+
Yes. Cloze cards are the best format for pathway recall. Select 'cloze deletion' as the card type in generator settings. Deckio creates cards that blank out one step per card, forcing full pathway recall.
Does it handle inherited metabolic diseases?+
Yes — and this is especially valuable for USMLE prep. Use custom instructions to request 'disease association cards linking each enzyme deficiency to clinical presentation.'
Is it useful for MCAT biochemistry?+
Yes. MCAT biochem emphasizes amino acids, protein structure, enzyme kinetics, and central metabolism. Upload Kaplan or Princeton Review biochem chapters for a focused MCAT deck.
Can I generate cards from diagram-heavy pathway PDFs?+
Deckio extracts text content — pathway names, enzyme names, regulation notes. For pure diagram content, it works best when paired with the caption or descriptive text on the same page.
Does it work for upper-division biochem courses?+
Yes. Molecular biology biochem (DNA replication, transcription, translation), enzyme kinetics, and signaling pathways all generate cleanly. Upload the specific chapter you are studying.
Can I export to Anki for long-term retention?+
Yes. Biochem content is worth retaining for Step 1 and beyond. Export as .apkg and add to your long-term Anki collection.
